Les maladies des mollusques : étiologie et progrès récents des recherches ArchiMer
Grizel, Henri.
Recent research in mollusc pathology has enabled different pathogens of the large systematlc groups to be described. The main microorganisms and Protozoans are enumerated showing the economic incidence of the deseases on mollusc production. We also mention recent results obtained in the laborarory for dlfferent purified organisms. Finally, we review advances in cell culture giving an example of the application of these techniques experimental pathogenesis.

An infection of Ruditapes decussatus (Bivalvia) by Rickettsia ArchiMer
Mialhe, Eric; Chagot, Dominique; Boulo, Viviane; Comps, Michel; Ruano, Francisco; Grizel, Henri.
The authors report the presence of a Rickettsia in Ruditapes decussatus from natural populations of the Algarve (Portugal). Light microscopic shows infections of varying importance in gill tissues. Some enclose small procaryotic colonies (cp) scattered in all lamellae; in others, the colonies are scarce and hypertrophic (100 mu m). These different pictures suggest an amplification process. Digestive diverticulae may also be infected, but to a lesser extent. The ultrastructural features of this intravacuolar (mvd: densified vacuolar membrane) procaryote (P) and its multiplication by scission without a complex developmental cycle allows its classification in the order Rickettsiales.

Infectious pathology in mollusc and shrimp hatcheries ArchiMer
Mialhe, Eric.
Development of aquaculture has been linked to zootechnical mastering of larval production in hatcheries. Regular and excessive use of antibiotics (antifungal or antibacterial) may thus also be reduced, permitting to limit release of these products in sea-water and, consequently, avoiding progressive selection of resistant-strains.

L'ionisation des produits de la pêche ArchiMer
Kodo, Jean-louis.
Fishes and fishery products are seafoods which have a nutritive value with a high proteins rate. Fishery products ionization has four steps: the radappertization (sterilization of the seafood), the radicidation (destruction of the pathogen germs), the radurization (food conservation and microbial flora reduction), the desinsectization (insects and parasites elimination). Fishery products quality control is very important

In vitro culture of mollusc hemocytes. Functional study of burst respiratory activity and analysis of interactions with protozoan and procaryotic pathogens ArchiMer
Boulo, Viviane; Hervio, Dominique; Morvan, Annie; Bachere, Evelyne; Mialhe, Eric.
The chief importance of hemocytes as immune effectors in molluscs has led to develop researches for in vitro culture. The chemiluminescence technique has been used to estimate the phagocytosis capacity of Crassostrea gigas hemocytes according to different culture media and times. Sea water was used as a basic medium. Additives, such as antibiotics or glucose and buffers, such as Tris or Hepes, were tested as weIl as artificial sea water. Hemocyte chemiluminescence activities were recorded at t=o in relation to the medium composition. The highest values were observed when hemocytes were kept in sea water without any modification. Whichever medium, chemiluminescence activity was substantially decreased when hemocytes were previously kept in vitro for a few...

Strategy of researches on marine bivalve defense mechanisms ArchiMer
Bachere, Evelyne; Mialhe, Eric; Noel, Thierry; Boulo, Viviane; Hervio, Dominique; Le Gall, Ghyslaine; Morvan, Annie.
Because of the impact of infectious diseases in marine mollusc aquaculture, research has been initially developed in pathology in term of epidemiology and diagnosis. The establishment of basic techniques for in vitro and in vivo studies of host/pathogen interactions and the progresses in the field of cellular and molecular biology have permitted to undertake researches in immunology. Parallel to fundamental interest in understanding defense mecanisms of molluscs against pathogens, applications may be expected for resistant strains obtained by genetic engineering.

Pathogens in aquaculture : specific pathogens or human contamination risks ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan.
The vatness of aquaculture ventures worldwide has taken impressive leaps durint the past three decades, and a large portion of this pertains to mariculture. Significant strides have been made in the design and implementation of more efficient and cost effective growing areas, feed, and harvesting techniques. Moreover the economic impact of aquaculture will certainly increase in the years ahead.

Comparative serology of the marine fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum OMA
Grisez, L.; Ollevier, F.P..
The different serotyping systems, based on thermostable O antigens, reported for Vibrio anguillarum and V. ordalii were compared by quantitative agglutination, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and subsequent silver staining or Western blotting (immunoblotting) of purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS), using polyclonal rabbit antisera. The results demonstrate that 16 different serotypes within V. anguillarum (designated 01 to 016) can be distinguished. Each of these serotypes is characterized by a distinct polysaccharide banding pattern, as revealed by silver-stained gels of purified LPS. The comparative analysis allowed a complete alignment of the different stereotypes for the...

Les échanges internationaux de crevettes pénéidés vivantes entre les pays du Pacifique, de l'Atlantique et de l'Europe ArchiMer
Michel, Alain.
The tremendous development of penaeid shrimp culture across the world over the past twenty years has led to international trade in eggs, larvae and spawners of the best shrimp species for aquaculture. Trade has involved, in particular, the following species: - Penaeus japonicus from Japan to Europe, the Pacific Islands and South America - P. monodon from South-East Asia to almost all tropical countries - P. vannamei and P. stylirostris from countries along the Pacific coast of South and Central America to the United States of America, the islands of the South Pacific, countries along the Atlantic coast of the Americas and certain countries in Africa. In the 1980s, research conducted by American and French teams enabled the breeding of stocks of spawners in...
